Rev. Dr. Martin Luther was born in 1483 in Eisleben, Germany. Luther was the son of Hans (a miner) and Margarethe. Luther was educated in schools throughout Germany. In 1502, Luther made a promise to St. Anne to serve as a monk after nearly being struck by lightning while returning home from university. After much discipline and training, Luther became an Augustinian Monk. Later, Luther was ordained a Roman Catholic priest and served the University at Wittenberg as a professor of theology. While in Wittenberg, Dr. Luther began to question some practices of the medieval church. Luther was concerned with matters pertaining to justification (to be made right before God- by God’s declaration). Martin Luther wished to draw people’s attention to the comforting and true message of the Gospel. Luther affirmed the Biblical teaching that sinners are justified by God’s grace alone through faith alone. Luther was concerned with maintaining the true teachings of the Bible and wished to help other see the wonderful truth of Justification by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:1-10)!
